DED organizes two seminars on innovation environments and SMEs

Wednesday, December 01, 2010
the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi offered two seminars: “Global and Sustainable Innovation Environments: Lessons from International cases” and “Making Industrial Strategy More Inclusive”. Promoting innovation as a key driver for industrial growth, while adopting a more inclusive approach to industrialization by working for and with small and medium enterprises (SME), form part of the comprehensive and integrated industrial strategy for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi that is currently under development in collaboration with all key industrial stakeholders in the Emirate. The strategy will take into consideration the needs and aspirations of public and private sector stakeholders; including current and planned industrial cities. Professor Martin Meyer, Ph.D., Professor in Business and Innovation and Head of Business and Management at the University of Sussex, led the seminar on innovation environments. He presented a review of diverse environments ranging from the development of Biopolis in Singapore to the creation of design and innovation clusters in Europe. Professor Meyer also explained what the basic blocks of these environments are and discussed the extent to which success factors can be transferred to a different context. Professor Hubert Schmitz, Ph.D., Professorial Fellow at the UK’s Institute of Development Studies, explained that making the industrial strategy more inclusive is a project of forging public-private alliances which support the overall vision and engage in specific activities. He drew on international experiences and challenged the audience to think about the obstacles and opportunities of making Abu Dhabi’s industrial strategy more inclusive. His Excellency Mohamed Omar Abdulla, Undersecretary of the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi, in his opening remarks at the event, addressed leading members of the Emirate’s industrial sector. He spoke of the collaborative approach utilized by the Department of Economic Development (DED) in the preparation of the Industrial Strategy for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and praised the interest and cooperation currently being expressed by the more than 60 public and private sector stakeholders who are working closely with DED. He also stressed that the Industrial Strategy is inextricably linked to the achievement of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and highlighted the important role that the implementation of the strategy is expected to play in advancing the Emirate towards realizing its industrialization targets and objectives as set forth in the Economic Vision 2030.
