Abu Dhabi Companies Learn About Exporting

Wednesday, September 12, 2012
The Foreign Trade and Export Support division of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) conducted its final of three “Introduction to Exporting” seminars. The three seminars took place at the HTC Men’s College Madinat Zayed, Al Gharbia (September 3); ADDED’s main branch, Abu Dhabi (September 5); and the Abu Dhabi Chamber-Al Ain branch (September 12). Approximately 80 attendees learned about exporting, its benefits to companies, and how ADDED’s Export Support division can assist companies with their export development. One attendee commented, “This seminar was excellent. This type of program is good for UAE business development.”The support of other Abu Dhabi organizations helped make the event a success. Dr. Adeeb Al Afifi, Director of Foreign Trade and Export Support observed, “The support of our strategic partners in developing Abu Dhabi’s private sector competitiveness continues to be of great value.” The Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development (ADCED), Western Region Development Council (WRDC), Abu Dhabi Chamber, and the Industrialist Union Society’s endorsement helped attract companies to the seminar. The attendees were actively involved during the seminar beginning to apply what was discussed. Export Support team member Mr. Humaid Al Awadhi led the seminars remarked, “The companies had very good questions but were asked to apply what we discussed. Attendees were asked to begin assessing whether their company has an exportable good or service.” He continued, “In one exercise we provided the companies some facts. They use these facts, other knowledge, and experience to identify three potential export markets. Then what are the three most important things they need to know about across the markets to choose one for exporting. It was well received by the attendees.”More than 50% of the attendees’ companies do not currently export. After attending the seminar, over 90% of the attendees stated that they want their company to begin exporting or if already exporting to begin working with ADDED’s Export Support division. The seminar’s program manager believes this is a positive, “We wanted to get companies that are not exporting to consider it and want to work with us. The companies that are exporting already, we wanted to make them aware of our services and programs. Everything suggests we did this.” According to Mr. Bader Al Jenaibi, Head of Section Export Support, the next step will be following up with the companies that sent attendees, he commented, “Our Export Development Executives (EDEs) that work with the companies and sectors will meet with the companies that expressed and interest with working with us.”  He added, “We will begin to make the attendees of upcoming seminars that will help them with developing the company’s capabilities and match them up with other programs and services that are being developed.”Export Support events are open to all companies as Dr Adeeb explained, “Some companies are exploring exporting, others may not wish to work with Export Support, but all companies are welcome to our events. All they have to do is check ADDED’s website for upcoming Export Support Events. If attending one seminar or event helps make the company a better exporter, it is progress towards making the Abu Dhabi and UAE private sector more competitive globally.”
